Chernobyl control room tour inside Chernobyl
Tour to Chernobyl Control Room
The history of the 20th century knows two nuclear disasters and one that was avoided by a miracle. In chronological order they were:
-
2nd World War. Nuclear bombardment of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
-
Caribbean crisis in 1962. USSR’s commitment to deploy ballistic missiles within the territory of Cuba that was confronted by the USA at the Atlantic Ocean. It almost caused nuclear blast exchange, but fortunately, the power of reason had won and mankind remained alive, at least for some time.
-
Chernobyl incident. The 4th power generating unit of ChNPP exploded in 1986. It brought about a lot of consequences and we can observe this aftermath till present days.
A control room of the nuclear reactor number 4 inside Chernobyl is a place where Ukrainian engineers turned off cooling pumps of nuclear pile trying to carry out a test on reliability in April 1986. This particular procedure resulted in the explosion that claimed the lives of 28 people, contaminated the surrounding environment with radioactive waste, altered the whole history of mankind, and influenced the fates of thousands of citizens.
This construction is located under a steel arch for a weight of 36 thousand tons that was erected above the spot around the reactor for purposes of prevention of radiation leakage. The only people allowed inside this control room were special experts and investigative squads. The explosion that occurred only thirty meters away from the control room and this room itself are the core of everything that happened later. Visiting this very place helps you to perceive the total magnitude of events that brought about a massive evacuation from around the premises. Omitting this silent room will make the story incomplete.
Is it safe to visit Chernobyl Control Room?
Please remember that among all safe places scheduled for visiting in Chernobyl and Pripyat this particular spot is the most radioactive but still secure in terms of radiation pollution. Actual visiting is limited with several minutes out of safety concerns. The most hazardous danger in this journey is radioactive dust. As explained by maintenance technicians this powder contains an essential volume of radiation. In order to avoid touching it, technicians use a special chemical spray to hold the dust on a low level. Specialized clothing, a breathing mask inhaler, and a dosimeter will make you completely safe and sound during this trip and make you feel as if you are one of those operators who used to work there. While you abide by the rules of your tour you will be exposed to less than four microsieverts. It is considered to be less than your exposure to radiation bombardment while your flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
There are several places of interest near this central control room, which can be also included in a schedule of a tour. They are:
-
Coolant circuit of the 3rd nuclear pile.
-
Tunneled dugout and control room.
-
Safe confinement, which covers the so-called Sarcophagus.
